There are plenty of things kids today have that we never did—smartphones, streaming services, same-day delivery, FaceTime, and more information at their fingertips than we could’ve imagined.

But there’s something special about growing up before everything became instant.

We had to be patient. We got lost. We made plans without texting. We spent entire summers outside without our parents knowing exactly where we were. Somehow, it all worked out.

If you grew up in the ’90s or early 2000s, these memories might just take you right back.

1. Friday Nights at the Video Store

Picking out a movie was an event. You’d race to the new release wall, hoping your first choice wasn’t already checked out. If it was, you’d spend another twenty minutes wandering the aisles before finally agreeing on your backup pick. Somehow, even the movie you didn’t plan to rent ended up becoming one of your favorites.

2. Hearing Dial-Up Internet

That unforgettable screeching sound meant someone was trying to get online—and nobody could use the house phone until it connected. If someone accidentally picked up the phone halfway through, the connection dropped and you had to start all over again.

3. Calling Someone’s House

You weren’t calling your friend—you were calling their entire family. “Hi, Mrs. Smith… is Ashley home?” There was no texting first or checking someone’s location. You just hoped they were there.

4. Printing MapQuest Directions

Before GPS, every road trip started with a stack of printed directions. Miss one turn and there was no friendly voice telling you to reroute. You either figured it out yourself or stopped at a gas station to ask for help.

5. Recording Songs Off the Radio

Getting your favorite song onto a cassette tape required patience, perfect timing, and a little luck. You’d sit with your finger hovering over the record button, praying the DJ wouldn’t start talking over the intro.

6. Disposable Cameras

You had a limited number of pictures, so every photo mattered. Then you waited days—or even weeks—to get the film developed, only to discover half the photos were blurry, someone blinked, or your thumb somehow covered the lens.

7. Waiting a Week for the Next Episode

If you missed your favorite TV show, you simply missed it. There was no streaming, no recording, and definitely no binge-watching an entire season in one weekend.

8. Playing Outside Until the Streetlights Came On

Summer days were spent riding bikes, climbing trees, playing tag, and knocking on friends’ doors to see if they could come outside. The only rule was simple: be home when the streetlights came on.

9. Memorizing Phone Numbers

Everyone knew their home phone number, their best friend’s number, and probably their grandparents’ too. Today, most of us couldn’t tell you our spouse’s phone number without checking our contacts.

10. AOL Instant Messenger

Your away message was basically your personality. Whether it was dramatic song lyrics, a cryptic quote, or “BRB,” everyone spent way too much time perfecting it.

11. Burning CDs

Making a mix CD took real effort. You carefully chose every song, arranged them in the perfect order, and decorated the disc with colorful Sharpie designs before giving it to someone you cared about.

12. Passing Handwritten Notes in Class

Long before texting, folded paper notes traveled across classrooms. Some carried gossip, others made weekend plans, and almost everyone remembers the classic: “Do you like me? Check yes or no.”

13. Saturday Morning Cartoons

Saturday mornings meant waking up early, pouring yourself a giant bowl of cereal, and watching your favorite cartoons before they disappeared until the next weekend.

14. Rewinding VHS Tapes

Returning a movie without rewinding it was practically a crime. Every family knew the phrase: “Be kind. Rewind.”

15. Sharing One Family Computer

Most households had one computer, usually sitting in the living room or office where everyone could see exactly what you were doing. Privacy wasn’t really an option.

16. Waiting for Photos to Be Developed

Every trip to the photo lab felt like opening a mystery box. You never knew which pictures would turn out amazing and which ones would end up completely unusable.

17. Actually Getting Lost

Before smartphones, getting lost was just part of traveling. You relied on road signs, paper maps, or asking strangers for directions—and somehow always found your way eventually.

18. Passing Time Without a Screen

Waiting rooms, restaurants, and long car rides were filled with conversations, games like “I Spy,” staring out the window, or simply letting your mind wander.

19. School Book Fairs

Walking into the school book fair with twenty dollars felt like winning the lottery. Somehow you always left with books, posters, cool pens, and at least one scented eraser.

20. Using Encyclopedias for Homework

Research meant flipping through giant encyclopedia volumes or spending hours at the library. There was no typing a question into Google and getting an answer in seconds.

21. Watching the TV Guide Channel

If you wanted to know what was on television, you patiently waited for the scrolling TV Guide channel to cycle back to your favorite station after inevitably missing it the first time.

22. Tangled Wired Headphones

No matter how carefully you put them away, wired headphones somehow tied themselves into impossible knots every single time.

23. Waiting to See Birthday Pictures

You smiled for the camera and then forgot about the photos until they were developed. Looking through the prints days later was part of the excitement.

24. Ding Dong Ditch

Ring the doorbell, sprint away as fast as possible, and try not to laugh while hiding behind a bush. It was childhood mischief at its finest.

25. Road Trips Without Tablets

Long drives meant counting cows, playing the license plate game, spotting funny-shaped clouds, and asking, “Are we there yet?” at least a dozen times.

26. Watching Music Videos on TV

There was a time when music television actually played music videos all day. Finding your favorite artist on TV felt like winning the jackpot.

27. Phone Books

Need to find a business or someone’s phone number? You reached for the giant Yellow Pages instead of pulling out your phone.

28. Computer Lab Day

Computer lab was everyone’s favorite class. Whether you were learning to type or trying to survive Oregon Trail, it always felt like the coolest part of the school week.

29. Saving Ticket Stubs

Movie tickets, concert tickets, amusement park passes—we saved them all because they were tiny reminders of some of our favorite memories.

30. Renting Video Games

You had just a few days to beat the game before it had to go back. Every hour counted.

31. Waiting by the Phone

Sometimes you literally sat near the phone hoping someone would call. There were no read receipts or typing indicators—just patience.

32. Disney Channel Original Movie Premieres

Watching a brand-new Disney Channel movie felt like a huge event. Everyone watched it the same night, and everyone talked about it at school the next morning.

33. Finding Out About Snow Days on TV

Instead of getting a notification, you watched the local news crawl across the bottom of the screen, hoping your school district would finally appear.

34. Summers That Felt Endless

Summer vacation seemed to last forever. Days were filled with bikes, sprinklers, popsicles, scraped knees, and adventures that didn’t require a single screen.

35. Being Completely Unreachable

There was something freeing about leaving the house and nobody knowing exactly where you were. No texts. No notifications. No expectation to reply instantly. You’d simply come home later with stories to tell.

We Didn’t Know It Then

Looking back, it wasn’t really about Blockbuster, dial-up internet, or disposable cameras. It was about growing up during a time when life moved just a little slower. We got bored, so we got creative. We made plans without group chats. We made memories without documenting every second of them.

Every generation has its own kind of magic, and today’s kids will have stories we’ll never fully understand. But if these memories made you smile, you were lucky enough to grow up during a pretty unforgettable time.

How many of these did you experience? And what’s one memory you’d add to the list? Let me know in the comments!
